SCIENCE SCHOOLS

SUMMER SCIENCE SCHOOLS:
These include the National Engineering Summer School, Newcastle University Science Summer School and the Siemens Science experience.
The programs cater for students at different stages of their schooling and aim to provide a stimulating and interesting experience for participants.
Schools and clubs are sent application forms and information at the appropriate time.
When this arrives at the club the New Generation Director should appoint a suitable Rotarian to contact the local secondary school to encourage participation and provide school / club liaison.

Science and Engineering Challenge:
This exciting and very successful program began in our District and is a program of the University of Newcastle.
Thanks to the hard work of an outstanding committee led by Brian Atkins, the Challenge operates throughout D9670 and has extended to all Australian Districts.
Teams of approximately 25 year nine students from all district secondary schools are invited to attend.
Each day up to 8 schools compete in a series of innovating and challenging science and engineering tasks.
Local Rotarians help with supervision and as facilitators. University staff members conduct the activities.
Points are allocated at the completion of each task and winning schools identified at the end of the up to week long competition.
The winning schools then compete at regional and finally national level. Our club assists by encouraging local school participation, providing facilitators during the days of competition and by inviting teams to report back to the club.
A newly developed extension is the “Discovery Day” activity, designed to challenge Years 5 and 6 students, with a range of activities suitable to their educational development.  There is no competition involved.  Rotarians are invited to be involved as supervisors as well.
